and so now that it is possible that i have awoken somewhat… i shall bid my mother a happy birthday -and so today’s shows are for her… some of her records and just some songs that remind me of her. so appropriately starting with John Lennon (he died the same year as she did and i still remember it vividly -sitting at the dinner table with my grandparents and hearing it on the news -john not my mum that is…) from my absolutely favourite album of his ‘the plastic ono band’ what is often known as his ‘primal scream album’ where he worked through a lot of his ’stuff’ i guess -fucked off with paul, working through his mothers abandonment of him as a child and death as a teenager and also made at a time when he was madly in love with yoko ono. the result is heart wrenching politically astute raw nasty beautiful funny sweet harsh -all the good stuff

i won the verve’s forth album at eavesdropping last night -which is kinda awsome -not being a massive fan (even though apparently my boyfriend looks like richard ashcroft -i always though a bit weller -but aint a bad thing) but more than a little curious and have respect -like several of ashcrofts songs -so i thought i would share my first expereince of the album by playing a couple of songs from it

both tracks from ‘it takes a nation of millions to hold us back’ 1988 -seems bizzarre that album is 20years old -it’s still seriously spot on… and in keeping with the political theme -even though it seems odd to place country directly after hiphop -at their best they are astute/politica voices for the poor and oppressed so it doesn’t seem so strange and when talking to a bunch of prisoners and treating them as human beings johnny cash made this album not to be a hard ass but to show some compassion and humainty… i’m going to do that thing where i play a whole album -this being one of my all time favourites -it’s kind of like a rough as shit sunday stories -that us wee kids from the 70’s grew up listening to… this is johnny cash at his best -funny, touching, vulnerable, savage & rockin’
